Abstract

By the second half of the 17th century Ottoman Empire started to regress in economic and military areas, and important troubles began to appear. After this period with the loss of many wars at the end of the century modernization fact in ideas had become an urgent and obligatory process to effectuate in order to refresh and take the empire to its magnificent days.

With the renaissance western world had completed the basis of thought and seemed to take the advantage of the western word, which itself constructed on this basis. For this reason it came to a situation that had to be followed and imitated by the other countries. Our historians utter that there is no other choice than follow west for the Ottoman Empire, which started to regress.

Although the westernization concept has been discussed by many names and meanings (Muasırlaşma, medenileşme, yenileşme, garplılaşma, çağdaşlaşma, modernleşme,vs), in its general meaning, it has been an important element which effected our society and future in terms of the changing of culture and education. If we look at this point of view we can say that the 18th century is the beginning of the westernization for the Ottomans.

It is obvious that we made the most important alterations in educational field in westernization period. Also the first reforms in military field were made by means of education. First of all, the educators from Europe worked and than these entrepreneurs systematized the education. The result of the modernization of education in the field of military education had given birth to the modernization of education in other fields. Depending to these alterations new educational institutions in European way were installed in our country.
