UŞAK’TA HAŞHAŞ TARIMININ COĞRAFİ ÖZELLİKLERİ / Geographical Features of Poppy Agriculture in Uşak.
Uşak'taki klimatik şartların yetersizliği verim ve alkaloid oranının düşürerek haşhaşın dünya pazarlarındaki rekabet gücünü azaltmaktadır. İç talep, stok durumu, ihraç imkânları, Bolvadin Alkoloid Fabrikası'nın işleme kapasitesi ve uygulanan fiyat politikaları ve hava şartları gibi faktörler haşhaş üretiminde önemli dalgalanmalara yol açar. Bu durum haşhaş tarımının hakim ekonomik fonksiyon olmasını engellemekte ve diğer ekonomik fonksiyonlarla birlikte yürütülmesini zorunlu kılmaktadır.

Opium poppy is an important industrial plant that is used to produce morphine from its capsule and oil from its seeds. Uşak has an important place in the production of Opium in Turkey. That is, 10.9 per cent (5203 tons) and 8.5 per cent of Opium (1372 tons) production in Turkey in 2003 and 2004 respectively was produced in Uşak. After Afyon, Denizli and Konya, Uşak is the fourth city in Turkey among the 13 cities that produce Opium capsule. Uşak had 12.9 per cent of the total Opium fields of Turkey in 2004. At the same year, 9.2 per cent of 59311kg of morphine and derivative substances produced in Turkey was produced from the Opium poppies grown in Uşak. It contributed $ 2. 357 612 to Turkey's total income of $ 25 626 221 (9.1%) from the exportation of morphine and other derivative substance produced from Opium poppy (2004).
However, insufficient climatic conditions cause a decline in productivity of poppy and morphine ratio which causes Turkey to lose competitiveness in global market. Some human factors such as internal demand, quantity of the stock, export possibilities, alternate planting, processing capacity of Bolvadin Alkaloid factory and current fiscal policy causes fluctuation in Opium poppy fields and production of it. This prevents opium poppy farming from being the main economical function and brings about the result that opium poppy farming is carried out alongside other economical activities.
